SPOTLIGHT
Baskin's Department Store is a family owned business that was started in 1972 by Don and Annita Baskin. The business originated out of Trinity, TX and has been around for 24 years. There are presently nine stores spread throughout East Texas.
We talked to Bryan Baskin who is the Systems Manager in charge of computers for all nine stores. We asked Bryan about the success of the family business.

Tell us about your stores.

Bryan: The mainstream is western wear, but we also carry work wear and dress apparel. We truly are a department store. We carry men's and women's apparel, shoes, cologne, perfumes, and we just started to carry gift items. Two of our stores are "free-standing" and the others are in "strip centers" and malls. Our stores range any where from 5,450 sq. ft to 26,000 sq. ft. The typical customer of Baskin's Department Store is your everyday male, blue-color worker who comes in for his basic needs. We have a balanced customer base. We have anywhere from 10-25 employees at each store. We are not just a western wear store, but it is a big part of the business.

How long have you been using Retail Pro?

Bryan: We have been using Retail Pro for a year.

What did you do before Retail Pro for POS and inventory control?

Bryan: We used the standard cash register.

How has Retail Pro affected your inventory control and POS functions?

Bryan: Retail Pro has helped tremendously in our buying. Purchasing for nine stores means we are spending a lot of money on merchandise. We used to guess which store gets what. Now we can run reports and see exactly what each store is selling by vendor and buy accordingly. Before, we had to work from a percentage and guess what to buy. Retail Pro has helped us a lot in this area. Retail Pro's point of sales functions have quicken the check out process. This has streamlined and improved our customer service.

What do you find are the most useful aspects of Retail Pro?

Bryan: The reports features are the most helpful to us. Central pricing has helped us control our nine stores. We enter in all the prices at the main and all of the stores managers print the tags from the POs created by Retail Pro. Before, each store did their own pricing (with a guideline) and none of them were the same all the time. We have much better control over our stores with these features.

How do your employees like working with Retail Pro?

Bryan: At first, going from a basic cash register to a computer, there was some resistance and apprehension, but it has worked out very well. Everyone is really starting to use it and can see what Retail Pro is doing for the business. After the employees start working on Retail Pro they find it easy to learn. Retail Pro has allowed our employees to become more productive and more knowledgeable about the business.

What made you buy Retail Pro?

Bryan: We needed more control over our stores. When you have multiple stores in different areas and no control, it starts to add up. We have more control over the buying and access to the information at each store.

Did you compare Retail Pro to other Systems?

Bryan: Cary Baskin, the President of the company, was the one who made the decision to buy and compared Retail Pro to other systems. I think we compared Retail Pro to at least two other systems.

How do you think Retail Pro can help you with your future plans?

Bryan: Retail Pro will keep us streamlined and moving forward with the business. We have no fear of adding another store, because we have the ability to control our buying and selling decisions. I think it would be very easy to add another store.

How has Retail Pro financially benefited you?

Bryan: In the long run Retail Pro will pay for itself! Retail Pro has made us more efficient and we have saved a lot of dollars from the information it has provided for us. Retail Pro has been cost effective for us and we are now running 100% Retail Pro in all nine stores.

Thank you.
